PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT
On September 19th, 1989, Munich-based Hanns-Seidel-Foundation signed an agreement with the Government of Kenya about the establishment of a Resident Office.
Ever since, we, as a Political Foundation, are a reliable Partner in Kenya’s strive to support a government and society based on the essential values of human rights, equality, freedom, democracy, social justice and the rule of law.
Just as in Germany, or mission in Kenya is to enable the population to act in an informed manner in the political sphere. This is achieved through information and training activities on various levels and with various target-groups.
Good Governance
The Republic of Kenya is a multi-party democratic State founded on the national values and principles of governance referred to in its constitution. Hanns-Seidel Foundation offers support in the implementation of these values and principles through civic education activities for the Kenyan people and capacity building for elected Leaders and nominated Office Holders on the national and county level. Guiding principle is the support of an constructive dialogue between Government and civil society in all spheres of politics and decision-making by fostering the skills and knowledge necessary for effective collaboration.
Gender Equality
Kenya is the country of young women. 80% of it’s population is 35 yoa or younger, slightly more than half of which are women. Despite this, Women and Men still do not have the same opportunities and perspectives. Be it in politics or in business, in education attainment, health outcomes or access to justice, Women do not only compete with Men, but they also fight against social stereotypes at the same time. Hanns-Seidel Foundation addresses Gender Equality not only as a fundamental Human Right, but also as a crucial part of Kenya’s sustainable development. Women’s empowerment is key to growth, prosperity, and sustainability in any Country.
Climate Change
Africa is, despite it’s limited contribution, the continent most severely affected by global climate change effects, and it is the continent which is the least able to cope with its negative impacts. In the framework of International Cooperation, Hanns-Seidel Foundation supports a wide range of activities aimed at Mitigation of or Adaptation to Climate Change effects in Kenya ranging from grass-root and smallholder levels through all levels of Government and Administration up to the level of International and Global Cooperation. As a Political Foundation, we are seldom engaged in technical aspects of Climate Change. Rather, our concern are policy issues dealing with the challenges of Climate Change and activities to create and share knowledge about ways to adopt and mitigate its adverse effects.
